New Oaks Primary

PSHE

At New Oaks, we are committed to providing a high-quality Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education (PSHE) curriculum that is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students. As a school dedicated to supporting learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN), our PSHE provision is designed to empower all students to develop essential skills and knowledge for their personal well-being, social interaction, and active participation in the wider community. Our PSHE curriculum is incorporated across our curriculum, with areas of focus in sessions such as circle time, school outings, snack time and playtime.

Health and wellbeing

At New Oaks, we prioritise the health and well-being of every student. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to empower students to understand and manage their physical, emotional, and mental health in a way that is accessible and meaningful to them. Through cross curricular learning, circle times sessions and activities we focus on promoting healthy lifestyles, including good hygiene, healthy food exploration and the importance of physical activity. We also provide students with the tools to understand and manage their emotions, build resilience, and develop strategies for coping with change. By offering our students choices through personalised communication strategies, we promote independence, which in turn develops student’s self-esteem.

Relationships

Building positive, respectful relationships is at the core of our PSHE curriculum. At New Oaks, we believe that strong social connections are essential to personal growth and well-being. Our activities guide students in developing key social skills such as communication, turn-taking and play to help students to engage with peers and adults in a constructive manner. We teach students about healthy relationships, consent, and personal boundaries, empowering them to understand the importance of respect and kindness in their interactions with others. In addition, we provide opportunities for students to practice conflict resolution and develop the skills necessary to navigate social situations with confidence and understanding. By focusing on relationships, we aim to provide a supportive, inclusive community where all students feel valued and safe.

Living in the Wider World

We prepare students to be active, responsible, and informed people in the wider world. Our PSHE curriculum helps students understand their rights and responsibilities within their local and global communities. We teach essential life skills, such as dressing, personal care, choice making and problem-solving, to help students become more independent and confident in managing everyday challenges. Through school trips, playtime and activities during lessons we promote a greater understanding of the world around our students and the importance of respecting others. By developing an awareness of their place in the world, students at New Oaks are better equipped to make informed choices, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and embrace their future with confidence.

Relationship Education (RE)

At New Oaks School, we are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all our students to explore and understand relationships, personal development, and health. At

Primary level, students will work on developing an understanding and awareness of themselves and others. This includes developing their senses, body awareness, recognition of body parts, and social skills. Our Relationships Education curriculum is embedded within our PSHE curriculum carefully designed to meet the unique needs of our students, supporting their emotional, social, and physical well-being in an accessible and age-appropriate way.
