Computing

At Oaklands, we are dedicated to providing an inclusive and stimulating Computing curriculum that is both relevant and empowering for our students. Through a variety of approaches, we ensure that learning experiences are meaningful and applicable to our students' everyday lives. Our approach begins with acknowledging each student's unique starting point, fostering inclusivity and enjoyment in their learning journey, and identifying individualised next steps for progress.

Computing at Oaklands is categorised into three strands:

-Digital Literacy. Recognising the importance of navigating the digital world safely, this strand focuses on teaching students’ essential skills for staying safe online. From understanding personal boundaries and privacy settings to identifying potential risks and appropriate online behaviour, students learn to confidently navigate the internet in a secure and responsible manner.

-Information Technology. Starting from hands-on exploration of basic digital devices and interfaces, we progress towards understanding fundamental concepts such as using keyboards, touchscreens, and navigating simple software interfaces.

-Programming. From exploring cause and effect to applying computing skills to real-life situations, such as using technology for communication, computational thinking and coding to solve everyday problems.

In Primary, Computing lessons focus on building early digital skills. This includes developing familiarity with digital devices, understanding basic concepts like cause and effect in interactive programs, and beginning to explore simple coding concepts through hands-on activities. Our teaching methods emphasise experiential learning and the use of highly engaging resources to foster curiosity and motivation.
