Total Communication Approach
At Oakland School, we support a Total Communication Approach.
This means we accept ALL types of communication and understand that students communicate through many methods. A total communication approach allows for integration of multiple modes of communication that are best suited for each individual.
The various types of communication may include;
- eye-gaze
- body language
- gestures (e.g. pointing)
- signing (e.g. Makaton, sign language)
- vocalisation
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication - AAC (e.g. symbol use, core boards, communication books, the use of devices
- written language
- speech
We allow and accept students to communicate in the most accessible way to them. Our Speech and Language Therapy team works in conjunction with the classroom staff and parents to help identify and grow our individual student's chosen communication methods. Chosen communication methods are integrated into classroom activities, which continues to encourage the use of Total Communication throughout the day at school and within the community.
