Picture Exchange Communication System
PECs is a system of communication using symbols to communicate which was developed in the USA and is managed by a company called Pyramid Education.
Their website contains detailed information about the PECs system.
Pupils are taught to use symbols to exchange for items that they want and progress to build sentences using symbols with which to communicate.
PECs was developed for pupils with autism and can be used either by pupils who do not have verbal skills or to encourage speech in those who do not use their verbal skills spontaneously.
Developing the Use of PECs at Oaklands:
Some of our pupils at Oaklands are identified as needing to use PECs as part of their speech therapy programme.
In addition, many pupils at Oaklands benefit from the use of symbols to help them understand information throughout the school day.
