Shiv
Shiv is an inquisitive and active student. He enjoys all aspects of his school life from PE and Design Technology to more academic lessons such as maths and English. Despite the hard work Shiv puts into every lesson, his education is unfortunately hindered by his severe learning difficulty. As a result, Shiv needs more support and resources than his peers in order to achieve his full potential.
For example, for Shiv to further develop his understanding of the dangers around him in the world, Oaklands ensures he has weekly visits within the local area. This could be to the nearby supermarket or park where he would learn about the risks of talking to strangers and the importance of crossing the road safely. These visits are only possible when his class are able to access a school minibus.
During lesson time, specific software, furniture and equipment are used in the class in order to enhance Shiv’s learning experience. He, and his classmates, also need a high ratio of students to teachers in order for students to access their education. Shiv needs regular breaks from his learning to keep himself focused, therefore the school needs to provide Shiv with access to gym equipment and outdoor apparatus to keep Shiv calm and able to learn.
One of the main aims of Shiv’s education is to ensure that he can make the transition from hard-working student to an independent young adult as fully as possible. This is only possible with the support of his loving family and the hard work of professionals at the school who, in turn, need specific resources to achieve this goal.
